Get to Know: Stuart Haygarth
January 21st, 2007Who A British lighting artist and collagist based in Berlin
What: For two years running he has been the star of London’s Designersblock: in 2005, he created Tide, a chandelier made from objects he found on a beach; this year he created Alladin, four floor lights/tables made from dozens of pieces of secondhand glass (he bought each item for under ten pounds) sorted by color (yellow, white, green, or purple/pink) and housed in vitrines lighted in the corresponding color. On the strength of his 2005 chandelier, London’s Design Museum also commissioned a piece of work from him—Twenty Twenty, a chandelier made from second-hand sunglasses—that went on view in September.
CV: Haygarth has a background in photographic illustration and set styling.
Why care?: One of the most exciting lighting designers out there, Haygarth has a great eye for styling and a knack for creating technicially minimal pieces with textural and visual interest. No white boxes for this man!
